Place des Arts is a multi-disciplinary arts centre in Coquitlam. The centre offers fibre arts classes for children and adults. Place des Arts is a short 20-minute drive from downtown Vancouver, just up the hill from IKEA.  Fall 2011 classes begin the week of September 19, 2011.

Spinning & Dyeing
18+ years

Discover the enjoyment and relaxation in learning how to spin yarns. You’ll learn about slubs, boucles, colour blending, fibre blending and chemical and natural dyeing. Create your own unique yarns for knitting and weaving. Spinning wheels are provided for at-home practice; equipment loans require a deposit. Teacher: Irene Weisner

Table & Floor Loom Weaving
18+ years

Beginners will learn the ins and outs of setting up a loom along with basic weaves and projects. Experienced weavers will have an opportunity to further develop skills. Table looms are provided for each student to take home between classes in order to complete projects; equipment loans require a deposit. Teacher: Irene Weisner

Spinning Clinic
18+ years

Are you an inch-worm spinner? Do you need to improve your spinning technique? Or maybe you want to learn how to make funky art yarn. Our well-equipped fibre studio has many of the newer spinning wheels as well as three drum carders to blend creative mixes of fibres and colour.  Teacher: Felicia Lo

PART I: Teapot
18+ years

This workshop will lead you through, and simplify the complexities of, making a simple teapot. The first class will be a demonstration-based workshop focusing on the assembly of simple thrown parts to arrive at a shape suitable for a tea cozy. The second class will deal with glaze application and the specific challenges of glazing more complex forms; remember to bring your bisque teapot to glaze. Register in part two of this workshop and make your very own tea cozy to fit your teapot! Choose a glaze to complement the colours of the wool you will use for your tea cozy. Teacher: Vin Arora

Students should be able to make a wheel-thrown lidded vessel or a handbuilt teapot to completion. Clay must be purchased from Place des Arts.

Part II: Tea cozy
18+ years

This workshop will embrace the insulating properties of felt. Explore the art of wet felting and leave the workshop with a wonderful one-of-a-kind, still-wet  tea cozy to fit your favourite tea pot. Materials are included, and new students are welcome to register. Register in part one of this workshop and make your own simple teapot to use with your tea cozy.  Teacher: Catherine Dumaine

Each student will receive a kit of materials. Students are requested to bring their favourite teapot.
