Greater Vancouver Weavers and Spinners Guild
Annual Memorial Lecture
Monday, April 4th, 2011 at 7:30 pm
New Location: Kanata Co-operative Community Building, 7155 Blake Street, Vancouver, BC
ALL TEXTILE ENTHUSIASTS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND THIS FREE LECTURE
GUEST SPEAKER Ruby Leslie of Ruby Charuby Weavings, Vermont AND “The Legacy of Information….Musings on Life and Weaving”
Ruby maintains a full-time weaving and teaching studio, “Ruby Charuby Weavings” in Vermont. Boundless enthusiasm for sampling and experimentation, especially with colour and its interaction with structure, has guided Ruby throughout her weaving career. An invitation from Handwoven magazine to create swatches for the “Color Forecast’ Series streamlined her design process and fueled her desire to share her insights about how to successfully integrate colour, structure and yarn in weaving without having to dye yarn or rely on recipes
After 25 years of sitting at the loom, Ruby’s thoughts have piled up along with her weavings and thrums. In an image filled lecture, she will address weaving as a metaphor, connecting us all to the distant past and onward to the future. At times amusing and idiosyncratic, Ruby’s recognition of her debt to mentors, family and students alike, takes her on a journey that culminates in a weaving rap music video.
Join us for light refreshments following lecture. We look forward to welcoming you.

Update Anne Field
We’ve probably all been wondering if Anne Field is okay after the New Zealand earthquakes (and she is). Lin and Ann forwarded me this information from the Greater Vancouver Guild.
The earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand was devastating–our hearts and thoughts are with the people of New Zealand as they begin the recovery process. We’ve been hearing from readers who want to know if we’ve heard from our spinning colleagues and friends. We’ve heard from some (directly and indirectly)–Margaret Stove and her husband and their immediate family are okay. Anne Field and her husband are also okay. Their houses have been damaged by the quake (and aftershocks), but they are able to stay in them. The Ashfords in Ashburton (about an hour away from Christchurch) are also okay.
Our member Rene is in north New Zealand and reported the following: She says the Art Centre where Anne Field has her studio is on the damaged buildings list, but not the list of buildings with trapped people. The Art Centre had been damaged in the last two earthquakes. Anne’s house is fairly new and beside a park on the north-east side of the city. This was the park they sent evacuees the first night, so hope this is a sign that this part of the city was not so badly damaged.

Fibres West Volunteers Needed
Sign up sheets will be sent around again at the February Guild meeting to help with Fibres West. Even if you can only spare a little time, every little bit helps so we can keep these type of fibre events happening. If you’d like to help out but won’t be at the meeting, contact Marilyn
40th Anniversary celebrations
As we begin our 40th Anniversary celebrations, we want to share our thoughts about the Langley Weavers and Spinners Guild. To do this, we need members to write a short paragraph for our newsletter; what does the Guild mean to you; who has mentored you; and what inspires you. We promise we will read each one and we will publish them in our newsletter from March 2011 until the end of the year. All submissions will be put into a draw and the winner will receive a free membership for 2011-2012. Please send all submissions to the Vice-President, Diana.
February Program
The simplicity of the technology behind the spinning wheel allows diversity — from the highly crafted ($$) ones to the more affordable homemade varieties. How do you choose what kind of wheel to buy? Double treadle or single? Traditional style or castle? What is the advantage of all the various ratios? Help!!
This month’s program is about spinning wheels. The learning goal of this program is to give members a chance to try different styles and to talk to owners about their wheels.
For this activity, we are asking members to bring their wheels to the meeting, along with some fibre for spinning. After the business portion of the meeting, we will set up the wheels and people can circle around and try the wheels, talk to the owners and explore the different varieties. If you have a unique or unusual wheel, we encourage you to bring that along as well. We also encourage those of you who want to buy or trade for a wheel. This promises to be an exciting and dynamic evening of spinning and learning about what is available for spinners these days and what works best for you.
Association of Northwest Weavers’ Guilds (ANWG)
The Board of the Association of Northwest Weavers’ Guilds (ANWG) is
conducting a survey related to future ANWG conferences and to obtain
other information that can help the organization plan for future
activities. You can access the survey at:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ANWGConferences. DO NOT click on the
survey link until you intend to take the survey, which will take about
5 minutes, or otherwise you will be counted as having taken the
survey. Even if you do not go to ANWG conferences, it will be helpful
to have this information. You do not need an account or password, your
email/IP address is not collected and your responses are totally
anonymous and private. The results of the survey will be made
available after they have been analyzed. The survey closes on February
25, 2011 or after it reaches 1,000 responses, whichever occurs first,
so please respond as soon as you can.
After you have finished the survey, please copy this entire message
and paste into an email and send to all of your fiber friends within
the ANWG region (AK, WA, OR, MT, WY, ID, BC, SAS, AB) regardless of
their affiliation with guilds or other organizations. We want broad
distribution of this survey.
Thank you for your assistance and cooperation. If you have any
questions about this survey including its authenticity, please contact
webweaver@broadband.com.
