GVWSG Memorial Lecture

The GVWSG Memorial Lecture this past Monday which was attended by 14 of our LWSG members. The  lecture/slide show was given by Judith MacKenzie who attended the Tinkuy gathering of about 400  Weavers of the Americas in Peru in November, 2010.  Judith described the fibres  of North America, from cotton and cedar bark to bison and the now extinct fur dogs to the conference attendees.

Bradner Flower and Garden Show, April 14 – 15 10am – 5pm.

Our guild has been asked again to demonstrate at the Bradner Flower and Garden Show, April 14 – 15 10am – 5pm. We have decided to do this a bit differently this year and are offering a Sheep-to-Shawl demonstration. Krista and the weaving study group are looking after the weaving end of things — they will select the weaving pattern and warp the loom. I have agreed to assemble a team of spinners for both days.
If you are interested in participating as a spinner please send me an email. In your email please indicate the following:
  • If you are able to help out on Saturday or Sunday
  • Morning (10 – 1pm) or afternoon (1- 5pm) — both are fine
Thanks everyone. I think this will be really fun and a great way to show the world the full range of our crafts.

Attention Guild Members

You were to hear of our February Program Plans at our January Meeting.

However the weather did not cooperate, so here it is.

We are planning a fun and interactive meeting (See Below for the Description and details). You will need to bring a small amount of fibre and embellishments to personalize your batt , your drum carder, if you have one, and your spinning wheel. If you have a larger orifice for your wheel it is recommend but not necessary.
Note: The more drum carders we have at the meeting the faster you can produce the batt and start spinning.

February Program – Crazy Batts – an interactive program

For All Skill Levels
Participants are asked to bring their drum carders, and spinning wheels to produce novelty yarns known commercially as “Plucky Fluff.”
The base fiber needed for the foundation of the batt will be provided by the guild.
This will be a colored Merino top (you will choose the colors).
You need to provide:
Bits and pieces from your stash to make your batt personalized
for example:

Colored yarn and fibre, novelty yarns, locks, silk ribbon. felted bits, glitter fibre, embroidery floss, narrow strip of cloth These will be added to the fibre during carding to make interesting batts.
When spinning the batts, silk flowers and felted bits can be added to add texture. These spinning techniques will be demonstrated during the meeting. You will produce funky yarns that fun to produce and fun to knit.
Does this all sound like fun? Or are you just confused? do you need more information
just ……

Google Plucky Fluff there are “You Tube” demonstration to view. Or call Krista

Please RSVP to Krista by email  If you are planning to participate.
This is to ensure there is adequate fibre and color choices will be available at the meeting. and there will be adequate carders and space set up.
