HATS!  FELTED, KNITTED, AND CERAMIC

Whatcom Weavers Guild members Donna Hunter and Marilyn Olsen will share their approaches to hats in several media.

Donna, an accomplished felt-maker, has made felt hats of many shapes and styles.  She will be showing samples of those and describing the process by which they are made. She also teaches novices to make hats in her Blaine studio.  Marilyn, a ceramics artist as well as a fiber artist, has made matching pairs of fanciful ceramic and knit art hats, and will describe her approach to knitting the unusual elements of her knit hats. Members and guests are also invited to bring hats they have made and show them at the meeting.

The meeting will be on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at St. James Presbyterian Church’s lower level meeting room at 910 14th St. in Bellingham.  Admission is free.

FibreEssence call for entry – Cherry Blossoms: a Textile Translation. April 17 to 29, 2012 at the Silk Purse Gallery, 1570 Argyle Ave, West Vancouver. Entries can be 48 inches wide or smaller, and follow the cherry blossom theme using anything from real petals to the suggestion of pink in an abstract design. This is a juried show and sale of wearable art, accessories and jewelry, to be held Sunday, April 1, 2012 at The Artemis Studio and Gallery, and The Seymour Art Gallery, Deep Cove, North Vancouver.

The show is a fundraiser for the Seymour Art Gallery, therefore 20% of income from sales will go to the gallery.

Accepted artists will be located at both the Seymour Art Gallery and the Artemis Studio and Gallery. Details regarding works to be included in the Parade of Fashion, as well as set up and rehearsals will be sent to accepted artists.

Artists are responsible for their own insurance.

Application Information:

Please include a brief cv, and send this along with your CD of images and your cheque payable to FibreEssence to cover the entry fee. Entry forms, CD, and fees must be received at the Seymour Art Gallery, 4360 Gallant Avenue, North Vancouver, V7G 1L2, by 5pm on Feb 16, 2012. Please mark your envelope “The Art of Fashion”

We require images of 3 pieces of the type of work you plan to include in the show.
Please send no more than 3 images per piece, and these should be jpg files. Keep them to 1MB or less. Remember, your work will be judged from the photos so do not have distracting backgrounds, and be sure to include a detail so the quality of the work can be seen. Indicate on the form the description of the pieces, along with the number of images per piece, in the order in which they appear on the CD.

Be sure your name appears on all pieces of your entry, including the CD.
We also require a description of your display set up and the amount of space you will require.

Artists will be notified of acceptance or otherwise by Dec 30, 2011.

There is space available in a workshop on Lace weaves to be given by Susan
Wilson Feb. 18-19, 2012. This workshop is sponsored by the Olympia Weavers
Guild and will be held at the North Olympia Fire Station on Boston Harbor
Rd., Olympia.

Participants will supply and work on their own looms. On the first day
weaver-controlled techniques, e.g. Brook’s bouquet and leno, which allow the
weaver to place the lacey areas wherever desired in the cloth will be
covered. Pictorial images and geometric shapes can be created at will. On
the second day lace will be created “automatically” using the
loom-controlled lace structures, e.g. huck, Swedish lace, and Bronson lace.
Students will create a sampler of a variety of weaver-controlled techniques
and one 4-shaft or 8-shaft loom-controlled structure. Drafting principles
for several loom-controlled structures, as well as techniques for creating
lace on other threadings, will be covered.

Level: advanced beginner or intermediate and up. Must be able to warp a loom
with even tension, weave balanced plain weave, and read a draft. 4-shaft or
8-shaft loom required. Drafts will be sent at the time of registration and
the loom must be warped and ready to go at workshop time. Cost will be
between $60-$70 depending on the number of participants. No materials fee.

I am wanting to start the weaving group as a regular monthly meeting
I am proposing the 4th monday in the month and can be daytime or evening.

I am hoping to involve   new weavers , using this group as a way to spark interest and support and your experience and expertise would be a great help.
Does monday still work for you if you are still interested to mentor or participate in anyway should be get some new weavers, let me know.

If you know of anyone who would be interested please let them know.  I will be sending out a message in the Jan newsletter (Great we have a newsletter again) to the membership just thought I would like to let you know first.

Ron Snyder will demonstrate traditional broom making at the December meeting of the Whatcom Weavers Guild.  He has been making historically accurate primitive American brooms for over 25 years.  He learned his styles from old master broom squires throughout the South, and he formerly owned a Shaker broom factory in Michigan for many years.  Ron will demonstrate broom making (which involves quite a bit of weaving) while telling the history of brooms in America, and how the craft has evolved over the past two centuries.  With the use of a resisting wheel, he will make both a basic sweeping broom for the hearth and porch, as well as a cobweb broom that is guaranteed to remove your webs with just a spin of the broom.  Handmade brooms are not only functional, they make wonderful gifts for the holiday season. There will be a variety of brooms for sale after the presentation, and what better way to start the new year than with a “clean sweep”.
